NUTRITION FOR THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
NUTRITION FOR THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
The digestive system has special nutritional requirements unlike that of the rest of the body. It is important to be familiar with these needs and to fulfill them.
- The Digestive System
- The digestive system breaks down all of the food you eat, which is later transported throughout the body by the circulatory system.
A healthy digestive system requires:
- A balanced diet of protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water.
- Regular physical activity.
- Stress management.
- Do not eat while agitated, fatigued, or worried.
Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber decrease the risk of:
- certain cancers, such as colon cancer
- diabetes
- digestive disorders
- heart disease
Fiber
There are certain nutrients and substances that affect digestion:
- Soluble fiber dissolves in the digestive system completely. There are two types of soluble fiber:pectin and gum. Pectin, found in apples and oranges, helps other nutrients to digest. Gum, found in many fruits, vegetables, and oats, positively affects the absorption of cholesterol and glucose in the bloodstream.
- Insoluble fiber adds bulk to the GI tract and helps move waste out. Examples are cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.
- B-complex helps maintain a healthy GI tract.
- Enzymes such as lipase, cellulase, and bromelain, aid in the digestion and assimilation of protein, fat, carbohydrate, and fiber.
- Herbs such as goldenrod, black spruce, poison nut, and wild hops, help calm and soothe an upset or acidic stomach.
